No one does protest like the neighbours of Lavapiés. On Saturday 3 February, 10 bands played on the stage of the neighbours: in the kitchens, living rooms and doorways of @vecinostribulete7 bringing an unprecedented concert to a building of 50 flats that are set to be evicted.
Flamenco, jazz, blues, swing, bolero and many more diverse styles of world music echoed throughout hallways and patios of the 104-year-old residential building in protest against mass eviction by vulture fund Elix. Around 500 neighbours showed up and shut down the street so the bands could play the remainder of their set on the doorstep of 60-year-old shoe shop @calzados_vinigon.
It was incredible. I’ve never seen anything like it and am even more proud than ever to be a vecina of Lavapiés.
