I’m a British/Indian journalist, photographer and teacher published in the BBC, The Guardian and El País. I’m also an activist and the woman behind popular local blog Madrid No Frills, covering the stories and images that define Madrid today. I’ve lived in Lavapiés for 10 years and, in this time, I’ve witnessed and reported on countless violent events that have led to the gentrification of my neighbourhood.

Throughout November and December, I will explain with first-hand experience how and why Lavapiés has intentionally been targeted by the authorities. I take a critical view on the previously held perception that gentrification is slow, passive, and inevitable, which I firmly believe it is not.

Gentrification is an institutional attack on marginalised communities disguised as organic urban development. It is social and ethnic cleansing of both long- and short-term residents. Understanding how and why this happens and what it looks like in reality is key to challenging the entire process of gentrification.

La Violencia de la Gentrificación

Soy periodista, fotógrafa y profesora británica/india que ha publicado en la BBC, The Guardian y El País. También soy activista y creadora del blog local Madrid No Frills, dedicado a cubrir las historias e imágenes que definen el Madrid de hoy. Vivo en Lavapiés desde hace 10 años y, en este tiempo, he sido testiga y reportera de innumerables sucesos violentos que han llevado a la gentrificación de mi barrio.

En Noviembre y Diciembre, explicaré con experiencia de primera mano cómo y por qué Lavapiés ha sido objetivo de las autoridades. Adopto una postura crítica con respecto a la percepción común de que la gentrificación sea lenta, pasiva e inevitable, algo que yo creo firmemente que no es así.

La gentrificación es un ataque institucional a las comunidades marginadas disfrazado de desarrollo urbano orgánico. Es una limpieza social y étnica de residentes a corto y largo plazo. Entender cómo y por qué sucede esto y cómo se ve en la realidad es clave para desafiar todo el proceso de gentrificación.
